About Cinephile Magazine

Cinephile Magazine started off as a haphazard blog titled Inside the Idiot Box back in September of 2005. Devised as a part-time project that would be updated once a week, it quickly turned into a interesting medium to express rants, news, videos, and movie reviews. Well, at the risk of further inundating the internet with more liberal chatter, the site morphed into a strictly film related blog with the intention of providing movie reviews, features, and a means of expressing viewpoints on the state of the film industry. While there will be a substantial amount of reviews of recently released films, the main idea was to go back and seek films that other sites ignore because of their supposed lack of relevance or their age. With your help, I would like to turn Cinephile Magazine into an outlet for intelligent film discussion and criticism. You’re encouraged to leave comments, and in the future the site will include a discussion board that will further enable the exchange of ideas. While this may seem like just another lacklustre and uninteresting website to the casual viewer - considering the proliferation of sites touting themselves as movie review central - I’m hoping my enthusiasm comes through in the design and, more importantly, in the content of the site.

Cinephile Magazine will be regularly updated, but bear in mind that I am the only writer so far. It’s temping to criticize the site for not having eight new film reviews every week, but I will do my best to contribute a steady stream of insightful reviews, commentary, and entertaining features, including an upcoming retrospective on Brian De Palma and Woody Allen. For list-junkies out there, there is an ongoing Best In Film project that will attempt to list the best films of every year from the 1930’s up to the present day, acting as an informative guide that will hopefully encourage readers to seek out films released prior to 1985. Also, the Pantheon feature will no doubt generate discussion as it recognizes a 100 of the greatest films ever made. The site’s imaginative and eye catching design could not have been done without the skill and dedication of Safi Inc.

Richard X (Creator, Writer)
A film school graduate (currently pursuing a Journalism degree), writer, and creator of this site, Richard was the only student given access to film at Lions Gate Studios, yet somehow wasn’t able to translate that success into a career as a studio executive. Having never written for The Village Voice, Variety, or The New York Times, his only outlet was the formation of this site. Of course that’s until he gets a real job.

If you’d like to contribute film reviews (of any film, regardless of year or genre) or interesting features to the site, please contact me at:
